Origin of Marshmallows

Fun Fact of the Day – Marshmallows originated from the mallow plant that grows in marshes. Ancient Egyptians combined the sap with a honey-based candy recipe to create a confection so delightful that it was reserved only for the pharaohs and the gods.

Candy makers in France then combined the marshmallow sap with egg whites and sugar whipped by hand to create the first marshmallows as we know them today.

Bonus Fact – The 1927 Girl Scout Handbook is the first publication to share a recipe for roasted marshmallows combined with chocolate bars and graham crackers, originally called ‘Some More’ and later shortened to ‘S’more’.
