Fact of the Day – In the movie Titanic, the story of the old couple who died together in bed was based on real people.
Ida Straus gave up her spot on a lifeboat to stay with Isidor Straus, her husband of forty-one years. When Isidor was offered a spot next to Ida, he refused because there were still women and children aboard. Instead, they put their maid on the lifeboat, wrapped her in Ida’s fur coat, and were last seen sitting together on the boat deck.
Bonus Fact – Isidor was the co-owner of Macy’s with his brother Nathan Straus.
